TRANSFER FEES
“Ludicrous Demand” (Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA ) LONDON. The New Zealand Football Association’s demand for transfer fees totalling $7OOO for two Canterbury soccer players, C. F. Martin and A. W. Gowans, has been called “ludicrous” by the London “Evening News” sports writer, Victor Railton. He said that the Crystal Palace club, with whom the two players are at present having trials, had asked the English Football Association to protest to the N.Z.F.A. He quoted the Crystal Palace manager, Mr B. Head, as saying that he had never known an association to ask a fee for an amateur. “This request from New Zealand has put a new complex oni the lads who joined us on trial last month," said Mr Head. ‘So far they have played only in reserve sides since they arrived,” Mr Head said. “There can be no question of promotion until this matter it settled.” After Martin and Gowans, both Canterbury and New Zealand representatives, left for their trials with the London club, the N.Z.F.A. imposed transfer fees of $4OOO on Gowans and $3OOO on Martin.
