Currency Offence
(NZ Press Association/ AUCKLAND, Dec. 28 I John David Donnelly bought United States currency to get replacement parts for his racing car. his counsel, Mr K. Ryan, said in the Magistrate’s Court today. Donnelly, aged 25, unemployed. admitted being a party to a transaction whereby foreign currency was exchanged for New Zealand money otherwise than through a trading bank without the consent of the Minister of Finance, a breach of the Exchange Control Regulations. 1965. Mr M. L. Morgan, S.M. convicted and fined him $2OO and endorsed an order for automatic forfeiture of the United States currency to the Crown. Sergeant L. D Graham said when police were investigating another offence they stopped Donnelly and searched him. They found he had SUS24O and SNZS7. Asked where he got the currency, Donnelly said he had been buying it around town for a long time He had bought the SUS24O from an unknown man in an hotel for 7s 2d each
