No Paper On Monday “The Press” will not be published on Monday, Christmas Day. Gratitude An elderly man telephoned “The Press” yesterday to express the gratitude of recipients of the Red Cross Society’s meals-on-wheels service throughout the year. He said he particularly wanted to give public thanks on behalf of the many deaf, blind, and incapacitated recipients who were not able to do so themselves. “If the Red Cross people are not the original Christians,” he said, “they’re the next thing to them.” No Meringue Although the Health Department has asked hospital boards throughout New Zealand to eliminate unnecessary expense, Christchurch hospitals this year plan the usual Christmas dinner for patients. “The only thing we decided to cut out was meringue, which 1 think everyone will agree can be done without,” said the chief dietition at the Christchurch Hospital (Mrs A. Rees) yesterday. The wards were all decorated, and with lamb, chicken, Christmas pudding and other traditional fare on the menu, the stay in hospital would be made as happy as possible, she added.
