SALE PUT OFF
Little Interest In Paintings
Although a reputed old master, “The Bathers,” by the noted Dutch painter Johan van Haensberger (16421705), was included in the catalogue, little interest was shown in an auction sale of paintings and etchings which was to have been held in Christchurch yesterday. The sale was called off. The 100 lots included a group of paintings from the Chaironi collection, Dunedin, among which was “The Bathers,” and a group of prints and drawings from the Kinsey collection.
The reputed Haensberger had originally been attributed to the brothers Both and was hung as such in the Chaironi collection. Before it was offered for sale, however, a photograph of it was sent to the Rijksbureau in The Hague. Experts there suggested it was more likely to be the work of Haensberger, who was from the school of van Poelenburg. Also in the catalogue was a set of 10 Gallipoli prints by Horace Moore-Jones, the artist noted for his Anzac painting, “Simpson and His Donkey.” Five etching-prints by the French artist Forain, noted for his religious and legal works (a study of a group of lawyers by him hangs in the McDougall Art Gallery), were also displayed for sale. Among other lots, was an original drawing from a series by Bartolozzi, an eigh-teenth-century Italian artist who spent much of his life in England making etchings of famous paintings.
