China Lifts Special Limits From British
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright; LONDON, December 2. China had told Britain that restrictions on the movement of her diplomats in. Peking were being eased, a Foreign Office spokesman said. The spokesman said Mr Donald Hopson, Charge d’ Affaires in Peking, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry last Monday and informed that all additional restrictions on the movement of British diplomatic staff in Peking would be removed and that the staff should revert to normal limits for the diplomatic corps. Movements of British diplomats have been confined to
the 500 yards between the diplomatic compound where they live and the offices of the British Mission. These restrictions were imposed by the Chinese Government after Chinese demonstrators burned down the British chancery last August. The British diplomats, like other foreign diplomats, will now be able to travel within a radius of 12} miles from the centre of Peking. Asked if the easing of the restrictions included normal issue of entry and exit visas for the diplomats, the spokesman said that Mr Hopson bad been told that applications would be dealt with in the normal way by the Foreign Ministry.
