Yachting Closely Poised

Both the Junior Cherub and P class yachting trials series are poised for a fighting finish.

After four races in the Junior Cherub class only 66 points separate the first seven boats; and in the P class P. Stemmer leads J. Fisher by just over one point The next best three in this class are more thgn 100 points behind, but still able to win should something befall the leaders. Excellent racing was seen from all the junior skippers over the week-end in weather which ranged from a drifter on. Saturday—the first P class race was abandoned because of the lack of wind—to hard, boisterous conditions yesterday. Many boats performed impressively, but most were unable to malntan a high standard tor more than one race. The points leader at this stage. Amokura (B. Hanlon and A. Smith) was the most consistent with placing! of fourth, first, third and sixth and fully deservea its position. At times when they were leading in the third race yesterday morning both Hanlon and Smith looked much better than the others, but the pace was too fast and they slipped back.

Most impressive In the hard conditions were Cherubye (M. Prestney and B. Fisher) and Kuaka (D. le Page and G. Sauer), although the latter threw away two positions on the finishing line yesterday afternoon.

Tijuana (S. Smith and S. Dinmore) was always fairly ateady and Casino (A. Ineson and P Collingwood) had the fourth race won until a capsize and a stop put them back .to seventh position. The unlucky boat so far has been Hana <N. England and L Jackson) which, after having a commanding lead in the third race, ripped the wooden track off the main boom. They started badly in the last race, mistaking the starting line and gradually pulled all the others, back with some excellent sailing to finish in second position. The favourite crew. Tahuti (B. Sinclair and C. Cotter) have not had a happy time and never appear to be up to form or able to hold the others.

In the P class, P. Stemmer holds his leading position by sheer consistency with his placing! of flrit, second and third, but it waa J. Fisher (Charterls Bay), who took all the honours yesterday. He thrashed the fleet by considerable margins In the herd going. Stemmer closed the gap to 25 seconds at the finish of the last race yesterday, but only because one ot Fisher’s bungs had come out and the boat was full of water. The other leading skippers, C.

Prlee, K. Graham and P. Lester, deserve their placing! in a good fleet. The trial series will conclude next week-end with two races for the Junior Cherubs at Lyttelton, and one race a day for the P class which will be sailed on the Estuary. Besults:—
