Christmas Concert
The Christchurch Harmonic Society, conducted by Mr W. R. Hawkey, gave its annual carol concert in the Civic Theatre on Saturday evening. Choirs from the Christchurch Girls' High School, St Andrew’s College, and the Cashmere High School assisted in the programme. The Harmonic Society sang a well-contrasted set of tradi-
tional carols arranged by Geoffrey and Martin Shaw and Vaughan Williams. As a tribute to the memory of the late Sir Malcolm Sargent the choir ended the programme with four carols arranged by him. The Harmonic Chorale, a small group of singers chosen from the main choii, sang compositions by Benjamin Britten, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Peter Sculthorpe. A treble choir from St Andrew’s College, conducted by Mr Clifton Cook, sang a group of carols arranged by Mr Cook, the choir of the Christchurch Girls’ High School, conducted by Miss K. J. Osborne, sang carols by Prae Tortus, Rubbra, Pfautsch, and Willis, with arrangements by Otteson, Katherine Davis, Malcolm Sargent, and Glays Pitcher, and the choir of the Cashmere High School sang carols by Shaw, Gilbert, Anderson, Thiman, Joubert, and Head. Bliss A. A. Thomson conducted a special girls' choir, Mr H. G. Harrison conducted the treble boys, and Mr J. E. Dennis conducted the combined choirs. As is customary at these concerts, hymns and carols were sung by the audience with the choir. The concert will be repeated this evening.
