FOXVALE CUP PICK

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Since he worked so well, nothing has been done to lessen the excellent prospects of Foxvale in the South Auckland Cup at Pukekohe today. His chance, rather, has become better because several of his opponents are going to be unsettled by the soft ground which seems certain after yesterday’s rain.

Only lady luck kept Foxvale from running Janeville close in the Waikato Gold Cup last Saturday. An accident near the half-mile, in which his rider lost his whip, cost him ground and he was late getting clear for a finishing run. In the circumstances, his third was a fine effort.

Geyser Land, a beaten favourite so often this season, could be Foxvale’s hardest opponent. On one or two occasions he has had no luck. One such occasion was at Avondale at his last start. His saddle slipped before the finish and yet he failed only by inches to beat Apa.

The failure of Foxvale and Geyser Land would leave the way for an outsider to win. Except for the two favourites, the field is wide open, with Arnie, Mr Fagan, Clarendon, Dee Dee, Misere, High Voltage, and Pacific Prince all prospects. Unpainted and Bywon seem the best prospects for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Paerata Two Thousand.

Unpainted, with second platings in each of her last two starts, thoroughly deserves success. It took a very fast gallop by Tabak to beat her last time and if she had gathered speed a little quicker she might have won. An impressive sprint at Takanini on Thursday brought Bywon into favour. Miss Lynette is a smart three-year-old filly with a favourable barrier position to match. According to the secretary of the club the track will be no worse than easy. Successful Comeback

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA.) MELBOURNE. Melbourne’s former "golden, boy” of the turf, G. Lane, is’ giving the He to the old adage that champions never make successful comebacks.

A double at Caulfield last Saturday gave him 11 metropolitan wins since his comeback, and he will be trying to boost this figure with five rides on the seven-race programme at the same track tomorrow.
