Surcharge On Wharves

The imposition of the surcharge for losses incurred by the stevedoring firms since early last year was unjust, said the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr E. J. Parry) yesterday. He was commenting on a recommendation by the Harbours Association to all harbour boards that they should advise chambers of commerce in their districts to resist the imposition of increased wharfingering and stevedoring charges. Mr Parry said that charges would be discussed by the chamber at its monthly council meeting next week. The objective of the discussion would be to take some positive action.

The charges, including the special surcharge, said Mr Parry, would amount, in some cases, to almost double the existing rates and were in addition to those announced by the waterfront industry, starting on November 17.
