Drug Warning Given

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. After receiving advice that much tighter drug tests would be used for the Mexico City Olympic Games next year, the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association is itself issuing warnings for the benefit of likely games representatives. The association has received from the International Olympic Committee a list of banned drugs and also a report on the growing use of anabolic steroids where synthetic derivatives of male hormones are used to build up muscles. The chairman of the N.Z.O.C.G.A. (Mr C. L. S. Cross) last week expressed concern that some of the banned drugs could be constituents of the various patent and proprietary medicines used by sportsmen in this country. Although these substances

may only be fractional parts of some other compound, they could be revealed in drug tests at the Olympics, giving the impression that the athlete concerned had taken larger doses. The association has circulated the following list of drugs that are considered to constitute "dope”, although

the list is not claimed to be exhaustive: alcohols, amphetamines and ephedrine, cocaine, vaso dilators, opiates (opium, heroin, morphine, pethidine, methadone), and cannabis (hashish). The association is satisfied that drug taking to improve competitive performances is not a danger in this country.
