HOSPITAL FINANCE
Block Grant Forecast (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 28. A prediction that hospitals would receive a block grant in the future to keep expenditure down to a minimum was made by the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board (Mr T. H. C. Caughey) yesterda •. He told the board that ho. pital expenditure had got to a stage which the country could not afford, and it was probably true to say that it had got out of hand. “Budgetary control is here for good,” he said. “It is something which this board has been advocating for a long time, and it is a good thing.” If the board did not spend all its capital allocation under a block grant, it could transfer the remainder to maintenance work. But any surplus could not be carried over. Mr G. G. Talbot, chairman of the board’s hospitals committee, said this could eventually give hospitals more freedom to spend their money wisely.
