Troops’ Pay Considered
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. The Defence Department and the Treasury are holding urgent talks on the pay position of servicemen overseas as a result of the devaluation of the dollar. “The Ministry realises that pay has a great influence on morale, and temporary measures have already been taken,” a spokesman for the department said. Married servicemen in Malaysia and Singapore were still being paid the predevaluation rate until it was decided how to adjust their pay. Single servicemen in Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam were being paid the devalued dollar rate.
Servicemen’s savings up to November 20 would be paid back at pre-devaluation rates and after that date at the devalued rate, the spokesman said.
