RIVERS DROP
Flood waters in both the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers subsided yesterday after heavy rain in the Southern Alps eased on Monday night. No reports of special damage had been received by the North Canterbury Catchment Board, the chief engineer (Mr E. B. Dalmer) said last night, but it was expected that minor bank erosion would occur as flood waters receded. The Waimakariri River, which was reported to be in “moderate flood,” was 7jft above normal at the gorge bridge at 10.30 p.m. on Monday, and reached a peak of 10.4 ft at the State highway bridge at 4 a.m. yesterday. The Rakaia River reached a peak of lift 6in above normal at 6.30 p.m. on Monday but four hours later it had dropped two feet The Christchurch-Arthur’s Pass road was open to traffic yesterday morning after a washout at Greneys Creek, which had closed the road about 8 a.m. on Monday, was filled with boulders and gravel.
The rainfall at Arthur’s Pass from Sunday morning to 9 a.m. yesterday was lOlin. Rainfall at the township this month until 9 a.m. yesterday was 50.34 in.
