TROTTING Glen Vale And Stereo Scott Work Well

Glen Vale and Stereo Scott showed that they can be expected to show to advantage in the President’s Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the New Brighton meeting on Saturday, with bold trials at Addington Raceway yesterday morning.

There was little activity at Addington, where the horses worked next to the rails in perfect conditions. A number of horses were given practice behind the starting gate and were later given light exercise. Glen Vale and Waitaki Hanover worked over 12 furlongs, with Waitaki Hanover setting the pace. They took 3min 17 3-ssec for the full distance, the last half-mile in Imin 3 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 3-ssec.

Glen Vale looks to have thrived since he finished third behind Bass Strait and Stewart Hanover in the Flying Handicap on the final night Of the cup meeting. Waitaki Hanover has had a fairly easy time since he failed in the New Zealand Cup and New Zealand Free-for-all at his only starts at the cup meeting. He looks particularly well and will probably have his next start in the Rangiora Cup on December 16 before going on to Auckland where he will attempt to win the Auckland Cup for the second time. Twelve months ago he beat Tobias and Viking Water after starting from 24 yards. Stereo Scott gave Spandau

and Zulita a handy start and finished alongside them at the end of an easy 12 furlongs in 3min 20 l-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 8 2-Ssec, and the final quarter in SOsec. Stereo Scott was an unlucky fourth in the Flying Handicap won by Bass Strait as she was forced to race three wide without a trail for almost the whole race. In the circumstances, there was merit in her effort. She will be one of the better prospects in an open field for the President’s Stakes, on Saturday. For Waimate Spandau has had an easy time lately and looks to have thrived. He is due to resume racing at the Waimate meeting on Saturday week. Racing for him on the West Coast holiday circuit is also being considered. Cathpete went away about 12 yards behind Goldwater and Gay Return and finished alongside Goldwater, with a length to their companion, at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 17 3-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 1 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 28 3-ssec. Cathpete looks in great heart and he will have prospects in the two-mile New Brighton Handicap on Saturday. He was pulled up with a broken hopple at the Geraldine meeting last week. Paying Guest made the pace but finished about a length behind Gold Heritage and Blue Tryax at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 16sec, the

last half-mile in Imin 2 4-5 sec, and the final quarter in 30 2-ssec. It was an improved showing on the part of Paying Guest, which may yet return to the useful form he showed earlier in the North Island. Gold' Heritage and Blue Tryax are rivals in the Members’ Stakes, the second leg of the on-course concession double on Saturday. Both will be suited by the flying start. Lustre Scott was held back to the New Zealand Oaks candidate, Flying Lady, throughout a very easy two miles in 4min 52 l-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 6 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 32 1-5 sec. Flying Lady, by Whipster from Northope’s Pride, will be having-her first race start on Saturday. She looks in need of experience. Lustre Scott is a form runner for the President’s Stakes on Saturday. She won the two-mile Churchill Handicap on the final night of the cup meeting at her most recent start. General Frost, by Thurber Frost from Arania, was given practice behind the starting gate, which will be used for the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes on Saturday week. He was then allowed to stride easily over 10 furlongs in 3min 0 3-ssec. He increased speed to record Imin 5 4-ssec for his last half-mile, the final quarter in 30 l-ssec. He is making rapid progress in preparation for his race debut at Waimate.
