Cat And Dog Go, Too
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. Thirty-nine men, four women, a dog and a cat constitute the complement of the Russian research ship Pelamida, now at Wellington en route to the Antarctic. The Pelamida, built at Lowestoft, England, in 1959, is about 600 gross tons and has a grey hull and white superstructure. Commanded by Captain R. Oleo, she left Vladivostock on October 20 with 10 scientists who will carry out marine biology work and oceanography. Their chief Interest
is in the behaviour pattern of whales and seals. The Pelamida has sensitive sonar tracking equipment with a range of 50,000 metres, and the scientists will use hydraulically-operated lighting gear to study the ocean at great depths. Among the crew of 43 are t four women—two cooks and , two stewardesses. 1 There are two pets, the cap- ! tain’s little Russian fox terrier, called “Dinka,” and a cat . belonging to one of the stewi ardesses. > The ship will remain in s Antarctic waters until late ■ April and return direct to t Vladivostock.
