Bound For Antarctica
When the United States Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier left Lyttelton for Antarctica yesterday afternoon, her captain’s 16-year-old son went with her.
Stephen Dawson, a pupil of the Fountain Valley High School, California, and the son of Captain O. L. Dawson, boarded the Glacier at Long Beach at the start of- her voyage. Permission was granted by the authorities for Stephen to make the round trip, but he will continue his studies aboard the vessel.
During his short stay at Lyttelton, he visited Christ’s College. The Glacier will join the Westwind and Burton Island to clear a channel through McMurdo Sound for the supply ships to follow. Due back at Lyttelton early in January, she will spend about a fortnight in the port for engine overhaul before sailing for Puenta Arenas, Chile, to embark 26 scientists for the international Weddell
Sea oceanographic expedition during which she will operat< with the Argentine icebreak er General San Martin am other vessels. Since she was last at Lyt telton, the Glacier has beei equipped with laboratorie for biological, geological chemical, magnetic and seis mic research.
