Century Stand In Trial Game
Solid batting by B. J. Patchett (108) and J. H. Christensen (81) paved the way for Patchett’s XI to score a formidable 383 for seven wickets against I. M. Walters XI on the first day of a Brabin Shield (under-20) cricket trial at Hagley Oval yesterday.
Steady rain began to fall about 3 p.m. but the match was continued until scheduled stumps. Before the rain, conditions J were prefect for batting on an easy-paced wicket, but a slow outfield and long boundaries kept the scoring down. Patchett and Christensen put on 133 for the second wicket and at times upset the fielding with their quick running between the wickets. Powerful Driving Patchett batted 215 minutes for his 108, hitting 10 fours and a beautiful hook for six. He began slowly but later scored attractively with powerful drives. Christensen looked sound and probably played himself into the side after some low scores in senior club cricket After Christensen’s departure the scoring rate dropped because of the rain and the largely painstaking batting of B. Bhapa, who has taken 160 minutes to score 38. He could have attempted to
score more quickly against a weary attack. Fielding Errors The early bowlers found little life in the wicket but P. G. D’Auvergne, a left-arm leg-spinner, was able to get some turn and keep the occasional ball low. He bowled with considerable accuracy in his marathon speel of 52 overs for two wickets but suffered greatly from fielding errors Walter, usually only an occasional bowler, bowled his off-spinners steadily although he did not extract much turn He came on at a time when the batsmen were threatening to run riot.
