Relief Supplies To U.K. For Christinas

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 28. Now that the London dock strike has ended, the British market, hard hit by foot-and-mouth disease, may well be relieved before Christmas by the arrival of new season’s lamb and dairy produce from New Zealand.

Meat Board and Dairy Board spokesmen say some supplies are already on their way and more are being loaded. There are, they say, excellent prospects of the early ships working to schedule and delivering their cargoes by Christmas.

The strikes have resulted in a. shortage of imported meat on the Smithfield market, wholesalers having been unable to replenish their coolers with the several thousand tons of meat lying in ships’ holds.

Meat import schedules were completely disrupted and diversions to other ports, such as Rotterdam, proved very expensive. A Dairy Board official says the strikes occurred at a very difficult period when last stocks were arriving in Britain before new season’s shipments.
