Will South Africa Be Admitted To Olympics?
r J'HE prospect of South Africa taking part in next year’s Olympic Games in Mexico City appears to be rather slim, although no decision has yet been made by the International Olympic Committee. A commission has been set up by the Olympic committee to investigate the situation and discover whether South Africa’s attitude complies with the rules and principles of the Olympic movement The commission will present its findings at the next meeting of the executive board in February at Grenoble.
When asked for his comments on South Africa’s chances of being admitted to the games, the 80-year-old president of the International Olympic Federation (Mr Avery Brundage), said: "Apartheid is the name of a political theory favoured in South Africa but with which many other countries are
not in agreement The International Olympic Committee is not interested in political theories. It is only concerned that each national Olympic committee comply with the rules and principles of the Olympic movement.”
