SPORTS AREA PROPOSAL
Reading Plan Declined It was unable to support expenditure on a road to open up 2000 acres of North Canterbury Catchment Board land at McLean’s Island for sports, the Paparua County Council decided on Monday evening.
In a report on a meeting between Paparua and Eyre County Council members, it was stated that a similar recommendation would be made to Eyre. About 170 chains of road would be needed. 30 chains in Paparua, and the rest on the Paparua-Eyre boundary, the report stated. There did not appear to be any certainty that demand for the land would justify the expense, and the board would retain control of the area.
Should an adequate case be made out, the meeting agreed, reading costs should be shared between the two councils, the sports bodies concerned, the board, and the National Roads Board.
