SOUTHLAND FISHING
Big Purchase , By Skeggs "The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, Nov. 6. In a purchase reputed to be worth about $500,000, Skeggs Fisheries, Ltd, of Dunedin, has bought 27 Southland fishing boats and seven Southland fishing companies. The companies involved were all substantially owned by an Invercargill accountant. Mr S. W. Jones.
Skeggs Fisheries have made it plain that no changes i in skippers and crews employed on the boats are contemplated. The purchase makes Mr C. G. Skeggs one of the biggest private fleet owners in the country.
Mr Skeggs, who is aged 35, was born in Bluff. He now owns about 50 fishing and oyster boats and has extensive markets for fish, oysters and seafood products. Skeggs Fisheries also has a substantial interest in the Chatham Islands crayfishing industry and is in the process of establishing a crayfish freezing and packing plant there.
