10ft Of Fence Smashed But Driver Unhurt

The doubtful honour of being the first to smash a hole through the safety fence at the Templeton Speedway this season went to the stock rod driver. W. Guy, who momentarily lost control of his VB- - machine during a dress rehearsal meeting last evening. A newcomer to speedway, he was leaving the north bend under power when two of the faster machines forced their way through on the inside, contributing to Guy’s misfortune. About 10ft of fence was demolished, but there was no damage of any account to the car or driver. A feature of the evening was the brilliant form of the solo motor cyclists. A. Brown won the first race in the outstanding time of 82.1 sec—the fastest of the night. And he also recorded the fastest lap, 19.2 sec, which was only .3sec outside the record. The second race went to R. Wright, who narrowly beat Brown with a classic drive off the apex of the bend just before the finish. His time of 84.4 sec was slower than the earlier event, but by this time the new crusher dust track had cut up slightly and times in all classes were dropping. Of particular note was the fine effort of R. Clarkson, who won the first novices’ event in 89.2 sec and returned a lap of | 21.4 sec—a time only top grade riders were achieving regularly last season. G. Raymond was the fastest of the three-quarter midget car drivers. His best lap of 22sec was ,Bsec faster than the best set by S. Burt, winner of the second event.
