Orbital Bomb ‘Known For Six Years’
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 6. The existence of Russia’s “new” orbital nuclear bomb had been known to the Royal Air Force for six years, the air correspondent of th “Daily Telegraph” claimed yesterday.
In Washington this week, the United States Defence Secretary, Mr Robert McNamara announced the Russians had been working on such a weapon. But, according to the “Daily Telegraph,” the R.A.F. not only know about it but had calculated its retalitatory needs accordingly. Latest details given on the weapon’s performance showedthat it was not as good as the R.A.F. expected. Russia was expected to have a really low altitude
missile or satellite by 1975. and this would indeed be dangerous. This was one of the reasons for the phasing out of Bomber Command the reliance on the Polaris deterrent The Russian bomb was really a “two-edged sword” for one of the greatest dangers was the misunderstanding of enemy moves, the correspondent said. This meant almost any satellite launched on a low orbit could start off the American retaliatory system.
