Child-Beating
Sir, —Two things could be done to reduce child-beating. (1) Conscript all girls when they turn 16 to help mothers of six-month-old babies for a fortnight. This would give mothers a rest and the chance to see their problems from a
new angle. It also might make girls less eager to get married. (2) Create a new career for girls, something after the style of the English nanny. Call her a nursery tutor and give her a modem training for about a year in child care, psychology, local civics, fashion design, deportment and grooming, first aid, and a month’s observation at a kindergarten. Charm schools could widen their scope to organise such courses for girls over 16. Later they could be employed by working for ill mothers to look after preschool children, taking them to parks, town, kindergarten and places of interest. They could be registered and wear a distinctive badge.—Yours, etc., MOTHER OF DAUGHTERS. November 6, 1967.
