New Charges Against Viet Demonstrators
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 6. Twelve people who appeared before Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., in the Auckland Magistrate's Court today on charges arising from incidents after the Vietnam demonstration on October 29, were again remanded on bail, until December 4. Further charges were laid against some of the demonstrators who first appeared last Monday, including Warwick Trevor Graham, aged 21, a fitter, and William James Lee, aged 20, an apprentice. They now face three joint charges, of assaulting Inspector G. Rees, assaulting him with intent to injure, and injuring him in such circumstances that if death had been caused they would have been guilty of manslaughter. Graham faces 10 charges of assault, obstruction and disorderly behaviour, and Lee eight similar charges. Against John Roger Sawers, aged 21, a fitter, are two charges of wilful damage, two of assaulting Constable R. L. Kerr, and one of assaulting Constable A. W. Tremewan, and one of resisting the police. William John Sawers, aged 52, a night watchman, is charged with resisting the police, damaging a police car and assaulting Constable Kerr.
Graeme Harold McLay, aged 18, a drughouse worker, is accused of disorderly behaviour, resisting the police and escaping from custody. John Robert Gabolinscy. aged 23, a schoolteacher, is charged with disorderly behaviour and resisting the police, and Rex Frank Barry, aged 37, a welder, with obstructing the police. Ronald Frederick Whiteland, aged 34, a painter, is charged with using indecent language; Arthur Heaton Mason, aged 17, a plastics worker, with offensive behaviour; and John Billingham Woolfe, aged 23, an unemployed schoolteacher, with obstructing the police and disorderly behaviour. James Lennox Mahoney, aged 17, a school pupil, is charged with assaulting Constable C. N. Bird and with disorderly behaviour. A 17-year-old schoolgirl appearing for the first time pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour. The Court was told that she slapped a police constable in the face without provocation and that later, when a demonstrator was being arrested, struck a police constable on the back. Interim suppression of the girl’s name was granted. The case was adjourned until Friday pending a probation report.
