Youth’s Life Saved
(N.Z. Press Association) NUKU’ALOFA (Tonga). November 5. But for the prompt action of a New Zealand doctor, Dr M. Miles, who is on holiday here with his mother, matron of the Vaiola Hospital, a 17-year-old Tongan youth who was the victim of a vicious shark attack in Nukualofa harbour eight days ago might have died. Dr Miles was on hand to halt the deterioration of tha victim’s condition by intravenous fluids when the duty doctor was absent on call.
Dr Mlles afterwards assisted with major surgery, working for more than six hours with two Tongan doctors on the boy’s badly mauled body, arms and legs. During the operation they took five pints of blood from i donors and inserted 150 stitches in the gaping wounds suffered by the boy, whose condition is now described as satisfactory.
