Award To Canty Skiers
(New Zealand Press Association)' AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Ski Association has announced that the Rothmans ski training awards for 1967 have been made to two Canterbury skiers, M. Gardner and M. Dennis. The value of the awards is $2OOO.
The president of the association (Mr A. Cooper, of Auckland), said the awards were part of the sponsorship announced earlier this year. They would enable skiers to go overseas for training with the long-term aim of raising the national ski racing standards. The first meeting of the national ski council at the week-end also confirmed the awarding of the T 1 ski-ing qualification? by M. Laird (Auckland) and M. WynnWilliams (Canterbury). This is the highest ski test in New Zealand and comparable with the highest in Britain. These T 1 passes were the fifth and sixth to be awarded in this country.
Only 56 passes in ski tests were recorded this season because of the lack of snow to run the tests. There were 536 passes last season. The 1968 New Zealand skiing championships would be held at Coronet Peak, the association decided. The 1967 championships were transferred from Coronet Peak to Ruapehu because of the poor snow season, and under normal circumstances the championships would have been held at Ruapehu again next year. Mr Cooper, who was elected for a third term as president of the association, said that a full New Zealand team was expected to visit Australia next winter. Gardner and Dennis are both in the New Zealand team to ski in the Winter Olympics in France in February. They will train in Europe before “Player Of Year."—The Runanga and West Coast representative back, B. R. Mann, has been named “Player of the Year" by the West Coast Rugby League Supporters' Club.
