MERGER TALKS
Mt Herbert Withdraws
The Mount Herbert County Council has advised the Lyttelton Borough Council that it does not intend further discussion on amalgamation in the meantime. The council informed the Lyttelton council in a letter received last evening that this had been decided because of the roading survey of the central Canterbury district to be made by the National Roads Board, and the possible impact of revision and consolidation of the Local Government Commission Act.
It was decided to reply to the Mount Herbert council that the letter had been received with regret and that the door to future amalgamation would be left open. Taxi Licence.—An application for a temporary taxi licence by a Diamond Harbour resident, Mrs Joan Irene Davidson, to enable her to continue the present private hire service at Diamond Harbour at the request of the proprietor, who is ill, was granted by the council. Quay Widening.—Plans for the widening of Norwich Quay have been approved by the Minister of Works.
