Three Yachts Share Racing Honours

Two Javelins, Koa (D. Elder and K. Fitzgerald) and Sundowner (C. and I. Smith), and a Flying Dutchman, Chinook (F. Simpson and J. Boag), took most of the honours in the week-end’s yachting.

In spite of near calm conditions with sometimes fickle ' breezes, there was intense racing and pertinent results. Yesterday afternoon a good strength fleet raced at the low tide course at Redcliffs and for the first round, in the lightest of winds, the R class Frenzy (J. Collingwood and B. Dickey) held a commanding lead on the whole fleet. Gradually the long Flying Dutchman came through to lead the fleet on lap two and ; stayed there, always sailing j faster with well-trimmed i sails. I Cherubs in Dispute Back in the fleet, but not too far behind, the Junior Cherubs were having a rare fight, with first Rana, then Casino, and finally Amokura and Tijuana all having a turn in the lead. Finally, the course had to be shortened to five laps, only six of the fleet finally crossing the finishing line. At Lyttelton, winds came from all points of the compass for the Canterbury club's first Sunday race of the season, and it was Sundowner which led nearly all the way only to be beaten by 16sec by Early Bird, with Koa a fast-closing third. Saturday’s race at Lyttelton was another fluffy affair, Koa winning narrowly from Ra (C. White and B. Robertson) with Sundowner third. There was another close finish in the B division. Tijuana beating Zenith by with Kuaka a further 15sec astern. In the P class. P. Lester won by the commanding margin of nearly seven minutes.
