Error Angers Crowd

Runners in the Stewards’ Pace at Claudelands on Saturday night shocked betters when they pulled up at the post after completing only a mile and a half of the two-mile journey. The timekeeper had sounded the warning bell two laps before the finish and the drivers naturally drove their horses out. In the confusion that followed the young reinsman, G. D. Grantham, kept his candidate. Light Earl, going and completed the full distance.

Several other drivers then realised the error and went on to complete the course. The judge then declared the result of the race official amidst loud booing from the large crowd.
