Exports Of Paper Clothing Planned

(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, November 5. Paper Fashions, Ltd, a privately-owned Whangarei company registered on October 5, with a share capital of $.30,000, will begin manufacturing paper clothing within a fortnight.

The company expects to have 60,000 garments on the Australian market before Christmas. First production will be with raw material imported from the United States and made in clothing factories already established in other parts of Northland to manufacture conventional fabrics. The chairman of directors (Mr C. R. Chaplin) said a New Zealand engineer had designed a machine which would process raw pulp direct from Kawerau and eliminate the need for any imported material. The machine could be built with all New Zealand components. The company’s aim was to make an all-New Zealand product—from pine tree to completed garment. To get the scheme started the company had secured an $BOOO licence to import raw material from the United States. Mr Chaplin said all 60,000 garments planned for early shipment to Australia would be children’s frocks to retail at from $1 to $1.50. The company, manufacturing under a royalty arrange-

ment with a New York firm, would be supplied with latest designs and patterns. This would rank It among worldfashion leaders.
