Two Records Broken In Time Trial Swims

Two centre record® were broken and several other good times were recorded in the Canterbury Swimming Centre's first special time trial session at the Centennial Pool yesterday. The outstanding all-round swimmer. Miss T. K. Shipston, broke the Canterbury women’s 220 yard backstroke record for the sixth time in her career, and one of the province’s bright young prospects, B. Lewis, smashed his own mark of Imin 39.8 sec for the under 12 boys' 110 yard breaststroke by s.lsec. The start of the competitive season in Christchurch is still about two weeks away, but the time trial session showed that many of Canterbury’s swimmers have been doing their winter calisthenica conscientiously.

It was a most successful inovation by the centre. There were 43 swims at the session and the general standard was highly encouraging. Miss Shipston, the only Christchurch member of the Olympic training squad to take part, produced two excellent efforts. Her time of 2min 38.3 sec for 220 yards backstroke was O.Ssec faster than her own centre record. In both this event and the 110 yards buttfir-

flv —in which she was only o.3sec outside her record of Imin 14.7 sec—she was comfortably inside the national qualifying times. Lewis’s swim was also a grand effort; he is evidently ready for another rewarding season. John Tillson Hmm 12.1 sec) achieved the national qualifying time for boys’ 110 yards backstroke. while his fellow Elmwood swimmer. Jeffrey Walker (2min 44.95ec), was less than a second away from the qualifying mark for boys’ 220 yards medley. Canterbury’s strength in girls’ freestyle was emphasised by the efforts of Maureen Darch (Imin 12.2 sec) and Shona Hallam (Imin 12.4 sec) over 110 yards. Jocelyn Hay (under 14 girls’ butterfly) produced a creditable swim of Imin 23.1 sec while Susan Hunter (under 12 girls’ breaststroke) was at least 4sec faster than last season with a time of Imin 42.35ec. Other good times were: Mark Lewis, under 14 boys 110 yards backstroke. Imin 21.9 sec; Walker, under 16 boys’ 220 yards freestyle, 2min 20.9 sec; Tillson, under 16 boys’ 220 yards backstroke, 2min 44.25ec: M. Johnston, senior 110 yards freestyle, Imin 4.ssec.
