Kindred Beaten, But Has Best Time

Although he produced a career-best time of 4min 38.5 sec for 440 yd freestyle, A. B. Kindred (Canterbury) was beaten by his young Otago rival, M. Borrie. in an exciting race in the Moana pool, Dunedin, on Saturday night.

However, the national men’s butterfly champion, D. F. Gerrard (Ashburton), gave an outstanding display to defeat Otago’s other youthful prospect, M. F. Toomey, over 110 yards. Showing the benefit of trainin the Moana pool, Borrie, last

Wright bettered the national qualifying times for 110yds freestyle Imin B.4sec) and 220yds backstroke (2min 41.3 sec) with two solid efforts. Miss C. J. Whiting, the other Christchurch member of the Olympic training squad, pressed the South Island champion. Miss C. Mitchell (Otago), over 110yds backstroke and produced her best time of Imin 16.8 sec. Other times by Canterbury swimmers were: D. M. Kindles, 440yds freestyle, 5m in 12.8 sec: 110yds freestyle, imin 4.7 sec; R J. Wilson, 220yds medley, 2min 41.7 sec: 110yds breaststroke, Imin 22.55ec.
