Kindred Beaten, But Has Best Time

Although he produced a career-best time of 4min 38.5 sec for 440 yd freestyle, A. B. Kindred (Canterbury) was beaten by his young Otago rival, M. Borrie. in an exciting race in the Moana pool, Dunedin, on Saturday night.

However, the national men’s butterfly champion, D. F. Gerrard (Ashburton), gave an outstanding display to defeat Otago’s other youthful prospect, M. F. Toomey, over 110 yards. Showing the benefit of trainin the Moana pool, Borrie, last

season’s national junior quarter-mile champion, led Kindred home by about 2yds in the Otago record time of 4min 36.75ec. It was an encouraging performance by hot! swimmers, and Kindred improved by about 7sec on his previous best this summer. Gerrard’s performance was exceptional, considering the limited preparation he has had this season. His time of Imin 2.2 sec was a second outside his best New Zealand time. Two Solid Swims The national senior and junior 220 yd breaststroke champion, Miss L. Smith (Canterbury) was within Isec of her best times, with swims of 3min 3sec for 220yds and imin 26.8 sec for 110yds. Miss J. Wright bettered the national qualifying times for 110yds freestyle Imin B.4sec) and 220yds backstroke (2min 41.3 sec) with two solid efforts. Miss C. J. Whiting, the other Christchurch member of the Olympic training squad, pressed the South Island champion. Miss C. Mitchell (Otago), over 110yds backstroke and produced her best time of Imin 16.8 sec. Other times by Canterbury swimmers were: D. M. Kindles, 440yds freestyle, 5m in 12.8 sec: 110yds freestyle, imin 4.7 sec; R J. Wilson, 220yds medley, 2min 41.7 sec: 110yds breaststroke, Imin 22.55ec. Kindred, 110yds freestyle, Imin 7.ssec; Miss Whiting, HOvds freestyle, Imin 9.4 sec: Miss M. Richardson. HOvds breaststroke. Imin 33.4 sec: 220vds breaststroke, 3m‘n 15.7SPC: Miss G Dacombe. HO yds freestyle, Imin 12 Rsec: 220 yds freestyle. 2min 40.2 sec; Miss B. Braithwatie, 110yds free style, Imin 16.7 sec: 220yds freestvle 2min 42 2sec. Gerrard also swam a zzoyda medley, recording 2min 41.8sjtc.
