Two Groups To Act
Two groups opposing the war in Vietnam have been given permission by the City Council to stage protest demonstrations in Christchurch tomorrow evening. The Joint Council on Vietnam and the Citizens' Vietnam Action Committee have arranged the demonstrations in support of action being taken in the United States to bring a million Americans to Washington in protest. The Joint Council has received approval for 12 cars to drive through the central city streets. They will carry protest slogans. An intercession service will be held in the Cathedral from 7.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. The service will be led by the Rev. M. A. McDowell, chairman of the Joint Council: the Rev J. L. North, Bryndwr Baptist Church: the Rev. E. H. Z. Chapman, St Martins Presbyterian Church; and the Rev. J. F. B. Keith, St Peter’s Anglican Church. Riccarton The Citizens’ Action Committee demonstrators, expected to total between 20 and 25. will assemble at Victoria Square at 7.30 p.m. Under their permit they are required to keep to the footpaths, not to impede traffic on their march through the city, and to carry slogans that are in good taste.
