HELP FOR CARRIERS
Suggestion By Industry Local bodies could help the road transport industry in the present recession by employing contractors’ vehicles instead of buying new equipment, the president of the New Zealand Road Carriers’ Association (Mr L. V. Etwell) said yesterday. Such a policy would benefit the ratepayers as well as the transport operators, he said. In Christchurch, 10 per cent of the 418 general carrying trucks and 35 per cent of the 329 shingle and reading trucks were not working, Mr Etwell said. General carriers could expect a slight improvement until Christmas, but this was unlikely for the shingle and reading carriers. The prospect of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment lying idle when new vehicles were still being bought by local bodies, counties and ancillary users, should be receiving the attention of the authorities and the Government, Mr Etwell said. Carriers might seek an interview with the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) on the matter.
