DRINKING WATER
Danger Of Disease The Department of Health is concerned that in spite of publicity given to the dangers of drinking water from streams and other untreated sources, cases of infectious hepatitis and other diseases of gastric origin can still be attributed to this cause. A department information pamphlet says the danger was highlighted recently when a group from a youth organisation contracted infectious hepatitis after drinking from a country stream. The pamphlet is prepared as a simple guide to treating small quantities of water for households, campers, trampers and travellers. “In New Zealand the quality of natural waters has deteriorated from that of the clear sparkling bush waters that our pioneer forbears knew. The legend remains and far too many people trust it to their cost in misery and pain,” the pamphlet says. It describes the heat and chemical treatment procedures for destroying harmful bacteria that may be present in water.
