Export Lamb Kill At Two Works

The new export lamb killing season began yesterday at the Belfast works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company and at the Islington works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company.

The Belfast works of Borthwicks and the Kaiapoi works of the North Canterbury Sheepfarmers’ Co-operative Freezing Company will begin today. Mr J. T. Fogarty, assistant general manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. said that a small chain had been operating at Belfast and about 835 lambs had been killed.

It was expected that about 1300 would be killed today and then about 1000 a day for the rest of the week. He thought that two chains would

be working at Belfast next week.

The company’s Fairfield works is due to start export killing on October 24. No date has been fixed for the opening at Pareora in South Canterbury, but Mr Fogarty said that it could be next week. The season was a little late but the tempo of the kill could soon increase, Mr Fogarty said. It seemed that feed conditions on farms were reasonably good.

Mr H. N. Davis, an assistant general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, said that one chain had been working at Islington yesterday and there had been enough stock for a full day. The company’s Smithfield works would start killing after Labour Day. he said.

The Belfast works of Borthwicks would start with one chain today, said the district manager, Mr A. R. Watson. A normal start to the new season was expected; full strength would be reached in early November. The manager of the North Canterbury Sheepfarmers’ works at Kaiapoi, Mr W. D Douglas, said that no rush was expected for the opening of the season today.
