COUNTIES MERGER
Report For Commission
Sub-committees of the Paparua and Halswell County Councils met yesterday to settle details of the information which has to be given to the Local Government Commission so that it can prepare a provisional scheme for the amalgamation of the two counties.
The joint report has to be confirmed by the Halswell County Council at its monthly meeting on Thursday evening, and it is expected that it will be in the hands of the commission in time for a provisional scheme to be produced by the end of October.
Neither council expects that there will be delays sufficient to cause a postponement of amalgamation beyond April 1 next. There is provision for objections to the provisional scheme, and to the final scheme, and for a poll if ratepayers ask for one; but neither council thinks this is likely.
