THIS PLASTIC “IGLOO,” to be used by the British Cerro Torre Expedition to the Antarctic regions of South America next month, has been designed and constructed by a company in north-west England. It is built entirely of glassreinforced plastics with a protective polyester resin shell. Coloured orange to help the explorers to see the hut in the snow and ice, it will give complete protection against what are reputed to be the worst conditions in the world, including 120-miles-an-hour moisture-laden winds. The hut is 8ft wide and 4ft high, and the rigid structure, which can be assembled in nine sections, includes a translucent cap for light.
