SMITH WINS NARROWLY IN FLOODLIT ATHLETICS

A duel between two former Canterbury half-mile champions, B. Smith and G. Hack, over 660 yards provided one of the highlights of an open inter-club meeting held under lights by the Technical Amateur Athletic Club at its Ensors Road ground, on Saturday evening.

At the finish Smith, who is making a come-back this season after a year away from the sport, just managed to head Hack by half a yard. His winning time was Imin 26.3 sec. Hack, present holder of the Canterbury 880 yards record, was .2sec slower. Hack set the early pace but after about 220 yards allowed Smith to go to the front. Coming into the finishing straight, Hack pulled out to overtake the leader but Smith sprinted furiously and Hack could not quite pass. With both of these fine athletes determined to regain the Canterbury half-mile title from the present holder, B. Dyer (Christchurch), there could be some excellent tussles over this distance during the season. One of the surprises of this, the first inter-club meeting held under lights in Christchurch, was the defeat of the Now Zealand women’s javelin, record holder, Miss S. A. Flynn. She was forced to concede victory to the Commonwealth Games shot and discus representative, Miss D. M. Chatteris, whose best throw went to 132 ft lin. The best Miss Flynn could manage was 130 ft Ain, about 20ft less than her national record.

The outstanding performance was by the St Andrew’s shot putter, H. Ruffell. Competing in the under-17 boys’ grade, he put the shot to 52ft 4in to unofficially break both the Canterbury under-17 and junior boys’ records. This was better than

the brilliant Auckland exponent, J. Antunovich, achieved in winning the national junior title earlier this year.

Antunovich recorded 51ft Sin in the championship. The present Canterbury un-der-17 record of 50'ft 2in was set by P. M. J. Walsh in 1964. He also holds the junior record at 50ft 6iin.

The New Zealand women’s half-mile champion. Miss L. Fisher, showed promising form to win the 660 yards event. Her time of Imin 39.65ec was good for this time of the season.

The senior men’s 1320 yards event was won comfortably by K. Hamilton in 3min 11.9 sec, well clear of his nearest opposition.

In the boys’ under-17 100 yards, the Marist sprinter, D. Berry, ran 10.4 sec to equal the Canterbury record held by A. W. Tweedie. Second place went to a Rangiora competitor, A. Doonan, who was only .Isec slower.
