Broadhurst Succeeds

A new name will appear on the Russley Golf Club championship board this year. J. R. Broadhurst, runner-up to E. H. M. Richards last year, gave a scintillating exhibition of golf to beat Richards. 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final on Saturday.

Broadhurst included nine birdies in the 31 holes played, to be six under the card when the match finished. Richards, one under the card himself, had no answer to golf of this calibre.

The Russley course was in fine order but, with the back tees in use, provided a stern test of golfing ability. Broadhurst took ; the lead with a birdie four at the 468-yard second hole and increased it with birdies at the fifth and sixth. He was out in 34. three up at that stage, and still three up after 18 holes. After lunch, Broadhurst was still in exuberant form and completed the third nine in 34. three-under, and after 27 holes, was 5 up. The match finished at the thirty-first with another birdie by Broadhurst. The intermediate champion ship was won by B. E. Quinn who beat J. Urlwin in the 36hole final, 3 and 2. D. K. Newcombe was beaten on Saturday in his first Australian tournament since a world tour in which he won the Wimbledon and United States, tennis titles.
