Long Wait For Return Visit
Since he moved from Riccarton to set up as trainer at Awapunl several years apo, E. G. Rosewarne has been hoping te get a horse good enough to campaign at one of the Canterbury jockey Club’s major meetings.
"I think I have that horse at last," Rosewarne said before the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham on Saturday. He felt more certain minutes later when his two-year-old, Palamos, finished brilliantly for second to the hot favourite Yamaha.
With this run Mr and Mrs Rosewarne's My Pal—Dolores colt became one of the early favourites for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Welcome Stakes on New Zealand Cup day “A Riccarton trip is’ now
pt-etty well certain,’’ Rosewarne told “The Press,” on Saturday. Palamos was flattered by the margin of half a neck separating him from Yamafia on Saturday because the favourite loafed on R. J. Skelton after reaching the lead. But there was much merit in the performance of the runnerup to finish three length and a half clear of Black Witch (third).
A minor feature of the race was Euchreloo’s performance to come from last four fourth.
Ardfern was an expensive second favourite. He broke from W. D. Skelton before the start and galloped away, delaying the start for several minutes. She showed early speed, but did not carry it far and finished in the tail-end group with Reveiller and Cuanto le Gusta.
