Beyond Wins Double Leg
Beyond and Avro won the Wellington Racing Club’s oncourse double for Wanganui stables at Trentham on Saturday, and returned $85.55. Feiramor, the runner-up to Avro in the Wainui Handicap, rounded off a concession double worth $16.10.
Beyond carried 11.7 like a feather weight for his win by seven lengths in the Glen Hurdles. M. J. Dombroski was so confident of Beyond’s powers that he took Mr A. H. J Gudsell’s Red Mars geld-
ing to the front seven furlongs out, After that it was only a question of what he would win by. Blue Defaulter was a clear second from Count Serene, which was badly out of touch with his jumping in the last six furlongs. Not for the first time, Humber made an early mistake, and it put him out of the race at the first flight. It was a disappointing start for backers of the favourites, and the Wainui Handicap did not improve the situation. Avro, the runner-up in the main race at Waverley earlier in the week, was the 9/8 favourite and Feiramor, the runner-up, was another lukewarm fancy. Gold Mint saved third from the unlucky Min Flicka, which was disappointed for a run in i the straight. Tara's Pride, the each-way I
favourite, made ground, but only slowly, for fifth. S. A. Brown, the Woodville trainer, of Min Flicka, had better luck in the October Handicap. The stable runner, Talavera, made all the running in the hands of W. D. Skelton and won stylishly by a length and a quarter from Jazz, which outfinished the long shot, Havering. The solidly-backed Riccarton horse Next Please, made little progress through the pack, finishing eighth.
