DUNRAVEN FIRST AT GOOD ODDS
Dunraven and General Myth, winners of valuable sprint races at Trentham last season, dominated the finish of the Wellington Racing Club’s Shorts Handicap on Saturday.
Dunraven just made it by a nose from his faster-finishing rival to complete a double worth $147.45. Dunraven, the tenth favourite, also won this race, but at less generous odds, last year. General Myth had not raced since the autumn when he won the Wellington Racing Club’s Thompson Handicap. General Myth is one of 13 horses entered by his partowner and trainer, E. T. Ropiha, for the New Zealand Cup meeting, and he should be a fofrce in rich sprint races at Riccarton. Dunraven had a good run be-
hind the pacemaking Game to the straight and battled to a short lead going to the furlong. Half a furlong out he looked likely to win handily, but it became a race in earnest when General Myth mounted a brilliant run down the inside. Another stride or two would have produced a different result.
Serena, the second favourite, and Floodlit, the favourite, led the chase after Dunraven and General Myth at the end. Loofah was an improver’s sixth, a position he reached after giving a little ground at the start.
