Women’s Softball Play Improves

The second-round matches in the women's softball championship produced better play than in the previous week.

Christchurch West found ' that it was not able to relax ] against a young Monowai B side which in its first match, showed that it has plenty of talent which could be moulded into a competent side. In a close game Avon proved to be too steady for Spreydon. Results: Christchurch West 15, Monowai B 8. I Avon 12, Spreydon 9. Monowai A bye. Monowai B v. Christchurch West Four runs scored by Christchurch West in its second innings gave it an early lead from Monowai B, which had two batters home in its first innings. The game remained even until the fourth innings when Christchurch West scored six runs from good hits by P. Hollands, N. Barlase and J. Bellamy. z Dow’n by eight runs, Monowai ■ B showed good form in the next innings to score five valu- . able runs, but Christchurch West continued to bat well and ! did not need to bat in its last innings. . F. Dixon, L. Woodhead batted well for Monowai B, and E ’ Mullally was outstanding for I her aggressive batting for j Christchurch West. J Avon v. Spreydon 1 A good hit by A. Caddie and some slack fielding by Sprey9 don allowed Avon to score ’ three runs in its first innings. * The side batted quite steadily - throughout the game with B. p Clark, Caddie and M. Balloch batting strongly. Spreydon’s batting was not as ’ consistent as that of Avon and } at its last Innings it needed five runs to win, but could only score two runs. A. Thyne pitched well for Spreydon. but she failed to rei ceive full support from her fielders. The relief pitcher for Avon. H. Williams, gained three
