Meat Cargoes
Sir,—Those who are despondent regarding the arrangements made for the dispatch of meat cargoes may be consoled by the news of a new roM-on, roll-off service. This will operate only to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers and will
most certainly . mean that those two ports will monopolise the coastal trade. In the aggregate those two ports will have a steady year-round demand for labour and services, whereas the meat ports will be seasonal. This arrangement could very likely prove more beneficial to the Lyttelton and Port Chalmers workers than to those at Bluff and Timaru, and prepare the way for a container service to Lyttelton.—Yours, etc.,
CONTAINER. October 13, 1967.
