Cut In Grants Denied
(N.X. Press Attoeiation) WELLINGTON, Oct. 13The Minuter of Education (Mr Kinsella) today denied allegations that education grants had been ent and that children’s rights were being taken away.
He was replying te criticism by delegates to the conference of the Federation of Housewives at Tauranga. Mr Kinsella described as
“ridiculous” a statement by a delegate that education boards had received Government grants—and had then been told not to touch them. He Mid money voted to education this year—and to be spent—■was $170.3m, compared with $158.5m in 1966, an increaM of 7 per cent.
An assertion that there would be Insufficient classrooms to enable five-year-old children to enter school next year was also “without foundation,” Mr Kinsella Mid. “Every five-year-old child will have a classroom place available for him in February, IMB.
“It is unrealistic to allege that the Government is chipping away at grants fbr education and taking away childrens’ rights. “At a time <rf national financial difficulty, when the Government is doing so much more for education,'it is harmful to the cause of education for people to make such irresponsible statements," Mr Kinsella said,
