Oxfam Celebrates 25th Anniversary
LONDON.
Oxfam, th® organisation which fights hunger in more than 80 countries, was 25 years old last week.
A few dtirens ef the British university city of Oxford set it up when they heard of the urgent need to provide aid for war-tom Greece. Hunger victims went being collected from th* streets by the cartload and Oxfam (the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief) found a way to help. From these small beginnings it has become a force in the world battle against
starvation, aaya the British Information Service.
Its income in the first year was a mere £3200. Now it is about £3m. From the 1965-66 income Africa received £709,850; India, £388,159; the Far East, £150,401; the Near East, £88,059; Europe and the Mediterranean, £81,114; the Caribbean and Latin America, £155,384. To mark the twenty-fifth anniversary Oxfarm is holding events in Britain this week. These, said an official, are designed to remind people of the affront of world poverty and to raise money for Its removal.
