Applicants should be preferably between 17 and 19, but may be up to 21 years of age. Applicants must pass a medical examination but a defect in colour vision or the need to wear glasses will not necessarily bar entry. Height should be 5 feet 7 inches but allowance will be made for growth during training. Cadets should have had 3 years secondary schooling but School Certificate or University Entrance is preferred. There are opportunities for attending University during the Cadet Course, and later of taking the Diploma or Certificate in Criminology at Auckland University. The Cadet Course gives both theoretical and practical training in all aspects of penal work. There is a comprehensive programme of physical training, judo, organised sport, bushcraft, first aid and driving Instruction. On successful completion of the two years residential course at the Cadet Training School, Point Halswell, Wellington, cadets spend six months on the staff of borstal or prison before their appointment as an officer is confirmed.
