Comment By Judge It was high time some men who stood trial tn the Supreme Court wtigjl that they insulted the intefflgence .of juries with the tales they put up in their own defence, said Mr Justice Macarthur juotordiy. His Honour made this comment before ifntenrinfi Donald Trevor Charles Gardner, aged 37, a workman (Mr D. J. Hewitt) to six months imprisonment for ear conversion, to be followed by one probation. Gardner, in evidence on his own behalf at his trial earlier this week, disclaimed knowledge that a ear he drove had been converted, saying that it had been tent to him by a friend, who had escaped police detection, and whose name he had not toM the pence at the relevant time because he was not sure whether it'was Williams or WilUam- - ■ “An Insoir ■ * His Honour described this ' evidence as “an insult to the let that influence me in passing sentence, I want yon to remember what you did in toe witMM-box earlier this Car conversion, said his Honour, was a serious and troublesome offence. He imposed six months imprisonment on Gardner, to commence at the expiry of any sentence or sentences Gardner has to serve as a result of default in maintenance payments.
